Educational objectives

The Graduate School of English Language and Literature aims to cultivate talented individuals for careers in academia and education by providing specialized knowledge in English linguistics, English literature, and English education. The master's program offers English linguistics, English literature, and English education, while the doctoral program offers English linguistics, English literature, and English education. The master's program aims to provide comprehensive knowledge of the major, while the doctoral program aims to deepen overall knowledge and acquire in-depth knowledge in a specific field.

Department regulations

A. Admission Information

  • The admissions process is divided into Special Admissions and General Admissions. For master’s programs, the selection ratio is 70% for Special Admissions and 30% for General Admissions. For doctoral programs, the ratio is 80% for Special Admissions and 20% for General Admissions. However, if the special admissions process fails to meet the quota of 50%, admissions will be made within the general admissions process.
  • Foreign applicants for master's and doctoral programs must be fluent in Korean or English.

B. Credit Requirements

  • Master's program
    • Students majoring in Linguistics are required to complete at least one course in English Literature, those majoring in English Literature must complete at least one course in Linguistics, and students majoring in English Education are obligated to complete at least one course each in both English Literature and Linguistics.
    • Students majoring in Linguistics are required to complete at least one course in each of the following areas: Syntax, Semantics, and Phonology.
      Students majoring in English Literature must complete at least one course in each of the following fields: Poetry, Novel, and Drama.
      Students majoring in English Education are obligated to complete a minimum of two courses from the following: English Education Theory, Research on English Teaching Materials and Methodology, Theory of English Assessment, and Theories of English Acquisition and Learning.
      In addition to the required courses within the English Education major, students are permitted to freely enroll in courses offered by the Linguistics and English Literature departments.
  • PhD program
    • For both the master’s and doctoral programs, students majoring in English Linguistics are required to complete at least one course in English Literature (e.g., Introduction to English Literature and Research Methodology). Conversely, students majoring in English Literature must complete at least one course in English Linguistics (e.g., Introduction to English Linguistics and Research Methodology). Students majoring in English Education are required to complete at least one course in English Literature and one course in English Linguistics (e.g., Introduction to English Literature and Research Methodology, Introduction to English Linguistics and Research Methodology).
    • English Language and Literature majors must complete a minimum of one course in Morphology and at least two courses in each of Phonology, Syntax, and Semantics throughout their master’s and doctoral studies. English Literature majors are required to complete at least one course in Criticism and a minimum of two courses in each of Poetry, Fiction, and Drama during their master’s and doctoral programs. English Education majors must complete at least three courses from the following areas: English Education Theory, English Textbook Research and Teaching Methodology, English Assessment Theory, and Theories of English Acquisition and Learning. In addition to the required English Education courses, students may freely enroll in courses offered by the English Language and Literature department.
  • Completion of supplementary courses Students who did not major in English Language and Literature or a related field at the undergraduate or graduate level are required to complete three credits of supplementary courses for the master’s program and six credits for the doctoral program. Specifically, for the master’s program, English Linguistics majors must complete Introduction to English Linguistics, English Literature majors must complete Introduction to English Literature, and English Education majors must complete English Curriculum and Instruction. For the doctoral program, in addition to the supplementary courses required at the master’s level, English Linguistics majors must complete one advanced course in English Linguistics, English Literature majors must complete one advanced course in English Literature, and English Education majors must complete one advanced course in English Education.
  • Completing subjects from other departments Students may enroll in graduate courses offered by other departments, subject to a maximum of three credits for the master’s program and six credits for the doctoral program. Such enrollment requires the recommendation of the student’s academic advisor and the approval of the head of the department.

C. Matters Regarding Academic Advisors

  • Master's program
    • During the first semester after admission, a professor in charge provides guidance on all aspects of the program, including course registration.
    • By the end of the first semester, each student must select a faculty member to serve as their thesis advisor, obtain the advisor’s approval, and formally notify the department of the appointment.
  • PhD program By the end of the first semester, each student must select a faculty member to serve as their thesis advisor, obtain the advisor’s approval, and formally notify the department of the appointment.
  • In order to prevent bias in the number of students receiving thesis guidance and to improve the quality of theses, it is recommended, as a general rule, that each faculty member supervises no more than two master’s students and two doctoral students per academic year, unless there is a shortage of faculty.

D. Foreign Language Examination Information

  • Master's program Students enrolled in the master’s program must sit for an English language examination.
  • PhD program Students enrolled in the doctoral program must take an English language examination. (A second foreign language examination is optional and not required.)

E. Comprehensive Examination Guidelines

  • English Literature major
    • Master's program Applicants for the Master's program in English Language and Literature must choose two fields among syntax, semantics, and phonology.
    • PhD program PhD students majoring in English Language and Literature must choose three fields from among syntax, semantics, phonology, and morphology.
  • English Literature major
    • Master's program Applicants for the Master's program in English Literature must choose two fields from among poetry, novels, plays, and criticism.
    • PhD program PhD students majoring in English Literature must choose three fields from among poetry, novels, plays, and criticism.
  • English Education Major
    • Master's program Applicants for the Master's program in English Education must take one subject from the following: English Education Theory Research, English Textbook Research and Teaching Methodology, English Assessment Theory, or English Acquisition and Learning Theory, and one subject from the English Language and Literature curriculum.
    • PhD program Applicants for the doctoral program in English Education must select two subjects from the following: English Education Theory, English Textbook Research and Teaching Methodology, English Assessment Theory, and English Acquisition and Learning Theory, and one subject from the English Language and Literature curriculum.

F. Thesis Submission and Examination Guidelines

Candidates who meet the following requirements are eligible to submit their thesis.

  • Master's program
    • commonness
      • Internal regulations regarding graduate school dissertations
      • Obtain at least 24 credits (average grade of 80 points for all subjects) required for graduation
      • Complete all credits for the designated supplementary subjects
      • Those who have completed regular registration for 4 semesters or more
      • Those who have submitted a thesis research plan and received guidance from an advisor for at least one semester
      • Those who have passed the foreign language test (English) and comprehensive test (2 major subjects)
      • Those who have paid the research registration fee once at the beginning of the semester in which they wish to claim their degree after completion
    • Department standards
      • The thesis plan must be presented to the department at least one semester prior to the preliminary and main examinations.
      • Applicants for a master's degree must submit and present a thesis statement with the same topic as the thesis plan (the topic can be changed in consultation with the advisor).

    Only those who entered the master's program after the 2018 academic year may submit a thesis substitute performance (research report) written in accordance with the guidelines for writing graduate school research reports in lieu of the existing thesis.

  • PhD program

      • Internal regulations regarding graduate school dissertations
      • Obtain 36 credits required for graduation and an overall average score of 80 or more (60 credits for the integrated course and an average score of 80 or more for all subjects)
      • Complete all credits for the designated supplementary subjects (however, students with 12 or more credits for supplementary subjects must complete 9 credits)
      • Those who have completed regular registration for 4 semesters or more
      • Obtain at least 4 credits in thesis research
      • A person who has received the guidance of an advisor and has given at least one public presentation by department and has been recommended by the advisor
      • Those who have passed the foreign language test (English, second foreign language: limited to the relevant department)
      • Those who passed the comprehensive exam (3 major subjects)
      • Those who have paid the research registration fee once at the beginning of the semester in which they wish to claim their degree after completion
      • Those who have presented their thesis plan to their department at least one semester prior to the preliminary and main examinations.
      • Those who have achieved a certain level of research achievements as determined by the department under the guidance of an advisor after admission

      Only those who entered the master's program after the 2018 academic year may submit a thesis substitute performance (research report) written in accordance with the guidelines for writing graduate school research reports in lieu of the existing thesis.

    • Department standards
      • Academic journal publication paper During the completion of the doctoral course, one of the following paper publication requirements (A) and (B) must be met.
        • (A) Publish at least one paper as the main author (first author or corresponding author) in a journal listed (or candidate) by the National Research Foundation of Korea or an equivalent foreign academic journal, or publish at least one paper as the main author or co-author in an SCI-level academic journal.
        • Publish at least two papers as the lead author in (foreign) academic journals other than the academic journals in Article (B)(A)
        • If the requirements are met, a thesis can be presented after obtaining the consent of a majority of the faculty council consisting of professors in the relevant major, after reviewing the resume, research achievements, etc.
      • Departmental thesis presentation Applicants for a doctoral degree must present at least one research paper in a related field before presenting their dissertation. The presented paper must be on the same topic as the dissertation or a related paper. The abstract should be short enough to be presented in approximately 30 minutes.
