Educational Objectives

The Graduate School’s Department of Design aims to cultivate the creative yet scientific abilities and qualities necessary to optimize design challenges from a comprehensive standpoint that integrates art, science and technology, and economics. Building on this foundation, the department’s mission is to train leader‑level professionals and educators—individuals who combine advanced theoretical knowledge with hands‑on practical skills—to proactively respond to design demands at the national, regional, and global levels.

Bylaws of the department

A. Matters related to Admission

  • All majors related to design or art offered within the College of Arts, or the College of Design shall be recognized as equivalent (or analogous) academic departments.
  • General admission The applicants' acceptance is determined through document screening and oral examinations. The type of exam questions should be posted to the department one month before the screening date so that they can be prepared in advance, and in principle, details should be decided through the department's operating committee. All other matters are basically based on the graduate school regulations.
  • Special admission Interviews and document screening determine whether applicants pass or not. The number of people selected shall be 100% of the total number of people recruited, and the qualifications for application shall be limited to those who have at least five years of practical experience in the relevant major field or are recognized for education, presentation of works, award, etc. The required documents also include portfolios. Except for the above, other matters shall be subject to the amendment.

B. Matters concerning credit completion

  • Master's courses require at least 26 credits, including two common required courses (6 credits), six majors (18 credits), and one thesis research course (2 credits).
  • Ph.D. courses must complete more than 40 credits within the major course, including three common required courses (9 credits), nine majors (27 credits), and two thesis studies (4 credits).

C. Matters concerning the foreign language test

The foreign language test for master's and doctoral courses is English in principle, and the implementation of foreign language tests is subject to graduate school regulations.

D. Matters concerning the comprehensive examination

  • The comprehensive test is conducted in two ways: a written test and a work evaluation.
  • The written test will test the expertise and research performance in the major field, while the master's course will have at least two examiners presenting two subjects, and the doctoral course will have at least three examiners presenting three subjects.
  • The written test is converted into 100 points for each subject, and if the evaluation score is less than 70 points, it is considered eliminated.

E. Matters concerning submission and examination of thesis

  • Submission and examination of a master's degree thesis
    • A person who meets Articles ①~④ of the Amendment may submit a thesis or a work claiming a degree.
    • The method of preparing a thesis requesting a degree shall be in accordance with the amendment, and in the case of "a work requesting a degree", it shall be in accordance with the provisions of the department.
    • The preliminary examination decision shall be passed when more than half of the professors responsible for the department and professors majoring in the department under their jurisdiction have obtained approval.
    • The method of the main examination shall be based on the amendment of the claim paper and the claim work shall be determined by the department, and the decision shall be passed when the approval of the entire professors of the department, including the professors responsible for the department, is obtained.
    • All matters except the above shall be subject to the amendment.
  • Eligibility to submit a doctoral dissertation
    • Submission of thesis shall be limited to those who have passed the qualification examination and have more than 100% of the research results after admission.
    • The qualification test is conducted as a written answer test, and the expertise and research performance of the major field are tested, and at least three examiners of the examination committee will present three subjects. The written test is converted into 100 points, and if the score is less than 70 points, it is considered eliminated.
    • Research results are limited to papers published as representative authors in domestic and international academic journals and holding individual exhibitions, and in principle, one or more publications should be included in domestic academic journals registered (or candidates).
      The score of one paper is calculated as 100%, and the individual exhibition is also calculated as 100% once.
      Other methods of evaluating research results shall be determined through the department's operating committee.
  • Eligibility to submit a doctoral dissertation
    • The thesis shall be passed through a preliminary examination and a main examination.
    • The preliminary examination shall be passed when the approval of more than half of the professors responsible for the department and professors majoring in the department is obtained.
    • In principle, the method of the main examination is decided through the department's operating committee.
      All other matters are basically based on the graduate school regulations.
