The graduate program in Social Welfare aims to cultivate professional and practice-oriented researchers who can contribute to the advancement of social welfare knowledge and the realization of a welfare state. This is achieved by firmly establishing the philosophy and values of social welfare and acquiring scientific and critical research methodologies, as a discipline that integrates both theory and practice.

A. Matters related to admission

The number of students selected through special screening will be limited to a certain proportion of the total admissions quota.

B. Matters concerning credit completion

  • Matters concerning the acquisition of credits The minimum requirement for the master’s program is 26 credits, including 2 credits for thesis research.
  • Matters concerning completion of supplementary courses
    • Students from other academic backgrounds must complete at least one of the following undergraduate-level foundational courses. These supplementary courses must be taken through the undergraduate program of the Department of Social Welfare at this university. However, if you have already completed equivalent or similar courses at your previous institution, you may submit supporting documents and request exemption upon approval by the departmental committee.

    • Students seeking social worker certification should refer to the Social Welfare Services Act and enroll in the required courses accordingly.

C. Matters concerning foreign language tests and comprehensive tests

The foreign language test is administered in English.

D. Matters concerning the comprehensive examination

The exam subjects are determined by the departmental committee and announced accordingly.

E. Matters concerning the submission and examination of dissertations

  • the requirements for submitting a paper A person who meets the following requirements may submit a master’s thesis.
    • A person who has obtained at least 24 credits (average score of 80 points in all subjects) necessary for completion of the course
    • A person who has obtained all the credits for completing the designated supplementary courses (limited to those eligible)
    • A person who has completed a regular registration of at least four semesters
    • A person who has been guided by a supervisor for at least one semester after submitting a research plan for a dissertation
    • A person who has passed the Foreign Language Examination (English) and Comprehensive Examination (two major subjects)
    • A person who has paid research tuition only once at the beginning of a semester in which he/she intends to claim a degree after completion
    • A person who presented a thesis plan at least one semester before the preliminary examination and main examination
  • Substitution performance of thesis requesting a master's degree program The following may be substituted for a master's thesis
    • Research report (following the guidelines for thesis substitution for general graduate programs)

F. Other

  • Matters concerning the selection of supervisors
    • The academic advisor is assigned through a department meeting after the student obtains consent from a major professor through an interview.
    • If it becomes impossible for the advisor to provide guidance (e.g., due to a long-term business trip or leave), the student must consult the department chair, submit an advisor change request, and obtain approval from the dean of the graduate school. If the advisor cannot participate in the thesis review, the change must be made at the beginning of the semester (March or September).
  • Matters concerning the selection of alternative performance for thesis requesting a master's degree program The decision to submit a research report in place of a thesis is made through a department meeting after consultation and consent from the academic advisor.
