Educational Objectives
The Department of Environmental Engineering is dedicated to fostering professionals with the vision and expertise to address environmental challenges both locally and globally. Our program emphasizes pollution prevention, eco-friendly process design, sustainable resource utilization, and advanced solutions for environmental protection. Students are trained to develop interdisciplinary perspectives and technical competence in key areas such as air and water quality management, waste treatment and recycling, noise and vibration control, and sustainable energy systems. The curriculum also focuses on pressing global issues, including climate change, water scarcity, desertification, and resource depletion. Graduates are expected to emerge as highly qualified environmental experts equipped with advanced knowledge and engineering skills, capable of contributing to innovative environmental solutions and leading global sustainability initiatives.

Departmental Regulations
A. Admission
- In accordance with the graduate school admission guidelines, admissions are conducted through both special and general screenings. The ratio of special to general admissions is determined by the Departmental Faculty Committee.
- For the Master’s program, applicants are required to select both a first and second choice of preferred major areas, and admission will be allocated accordingly.
- International applicants to the Master’s and Doctoral programs must demonstrate proficiency in either Korean or English.
- Applicants from related or similar fields outside the Department of Environmental Engineering may be accepted upon review and approval by the Departmental Faculty Committee, but will be required to complete designated supplementary undergraduate courses in Environmental Engineering.
- Any other matters shall be governed by the general admission regulations of the graduate school.
B. Credit Requirements
- Students must complete a minimum of 26 credits for the Master’s program (including 2 credits for Thesis Research) and 40 credits for the Doctoral program (including 4 credits for Thesis Research), covering both major and common core courses.
- Supplementary Courses: For students from different academic backgrounds, the Departmental Faculty Committee will designate supplementary courses for both Master’s and Doctoral programs. Equivalent or related courses previously completed may be recognized upon review and approval by the Committee.
C. Foreign Language Examination
- Both Master’s and Doctoral students are required to take an English examination as the foreign language requirement.
- Eligibility and detailed requirements for the examination follow the general regulations of the Graduate School.
D. Comprehensive Examination
- The comprehensive examination consists of two major courses for the Master’s program and three major courses for the Doctoral program.
- The subjects for the examination are selected from courses completed during the program and are designated by the Department Chair.
E. Thesis Submission and Evaluation
Eligibility for Thesis Submission: Students who meet the following requirements are eligible to submit a thesis
- Master’s Program
- Must comply with the general Graduate School regulations on thesis submission.
- Completion of at least 24 credits required for graduation, with a minimum average grade of 80 or above.
- Completion of all designated supplementary courses (if required).
- Registration for a minimum of four regular semesters.
- Submission of a thesis research proposal and receipt of guidance from an academic advisor for at least one semester.
- Successful completion of the foreign language examination (English) and the comprehensive examination (two major courses).
- Payment of the research registration fee (only once) at the beginning of the semester in which the thesis is submitted, following program completion.
- Presentation of the thesis proposal within the department at least one semester prior to the preliminary and final evaluations.
- Doctoral Program
- General Requirements Students must comply with the Graduate School regulations on dissertation submission and meet the following requirements:
- Completion of at least 36 credits of coursework (or 60 credits for the combined Master’s–Ph.D. program) with a minimum GPA of 80 or above.
- Completion of all designated supplementary courses. (For students with 12 or more supplementary credits required, at least 9 credits must be completed.)•Registration for a minimum of 4 regular semesters (or 8 semesters for the combined program).
- Completion of at least 2 credits of dissertation research (or 4 credits for the combined program).
- Completion of at least 2 semesters of academic guidance, with at least one public presentation in the department and a recommendation from the academic advisor.
- Successful completion of the foreign language examination (English, and an additional foreign language if required by the department).
- Successful completion of the comprehensive examination (three major courses).
- Payment of the research registration fee (only once) at the beginning of the semester in which the dissertation is submitted, following program completion.
- Presentation of the dissertation proposal within the department at least one semester prior to the preliminary and final evaluations.
- Documented research achievements conducted under the guidance of the academic advisor after admission, as required by the department.
Special Provisions for Integrated Program (Type II): If a student passes the foreign language examination and comprehensive examination during the Master’s stage, the foreign language requirement will be waived, and only on eadditional major coursemust be passed for final comprehen sive examination approval.
