Educational objectives

The Department of Political Science (Graduate School) frees up intellectual minds from conventional and commonsensical political knowledge so that they can cultivate objective criticism and ability to choose political ideology on their own. In the midst of a fast-changing global order and the wave of reform and opening up, the goal of education in the Department of Political Science is to foster talented students who can become responsible citizens with sound democratic ideology and spirit, strong willingness to act and participate and the cool-headed judgment required in the fierce competition of our society. According to these goals, the key curriculum of the Department consists of historical review of political systems of different countries, understanding of modern and contemporary political ideology, international community environment and how to resolve various conflicts, political decision-making process and policy analysis.

Bylaws of the department

A. Matters related to admission

  • Similarities and scope of recognition Department of International Relations, Department of Diplomacy, Department of Public Administration, Department of Economics, Department of Social Affairs, Department of Law, Department of Business Administration, Department of Philosophy, Department of National Ethics, Department of Education (General Social Major) etc
  • Matters concerning the admission process The number of persons to be selected for the special screening shall be within a certain range of the total number of persons to be recruited.

B. Matters concerning credit completion

  • Matters concerning the acquisition of credits A total of 26 credits (including 2 credits for thesis research) for masters and 40 credits (including 4 credits for thesis research) for doctors.
  • Matters concerning completion of supplementary courses
    • The master's course If a student who is not from a political science or similar department enters the school, the head of the department must designate three of the undergraduate majors below and complete them.

      Supplementary course credits are not included in the completed credits.

    • Ph.D. program If a student who is not from a political science or similar department enters the school, more than 12 credits must be completed as supplementary courses, including credits for alternative accreditation of master's programs.

C. Matters concerning the selection of supervisors

  • The selection of supervisors shall be made by the relevant students after receiving a commitment through prior interviews with their major professors, and the professor in charge of the department shall determine the supervisor.
  • Where it is impossible for an advisor to guide a thesis due to a long-term business trip or leave of absence, etc., he/she shall consult with the professor in charge of the department and submit a replacement of the advisor and obtain approval from the head of the graduate school: Provided, That where the period of business trip and leave of absence is not less than 3 months but less than 6 months, and where it is deemed possible to guide the thesis for the conferment of a degree after returning to school, the guidance of the thesis shall be delegated.

D. Matters concerning foreign language tests and comprehensive tests

The foreign language test is conducted only one English subject, both master's and doctor's.

E. Matters concerning the comprehensive examination

Comprehensive examination subjects shall consist of two master's subjects and three doctoral subjects. (Comprehensive examination subjects shall be designated by the professor in charge of the department from among the subjects completed during the course.)

F. Matters concerning the submission and examination of thesis

  • Qualification for submitting a thesis requesting a master's and doctoral degree: It is in accordance with the graduate school's bylaws.
  • Matters concerning preliminary examination
    • a doctoral dissertation
      • a thesis requesting a master's degree
      • The doctoral dissertation judges are recommended by the supervisor in consultation with the department's responsible professor.
      • The person who submits a doctoral dissertation must be a person who has published one or more major-related papers or is scheduled to present them after entering the doctoral program. However, even if the above conditions are not met, exceptions are made to those recognized by the Major Professors' Association that they have qualified to replace them.
    • a thesis requesting a master's degree
      • The thesis plan presentation will be conducted in February for the first half and in August for the second half.
      • The reviewer for the thesis requesting a master's degree is recommended by the advisor in consultation with the professor in charge of the department.
